Daughters of Reykjavík is a female hip-hop-group based in Reykjavík. They count 10 members and are recognized for their dynamic lyrics and energetic stage-performance. They have made a big impact on the music scene in Iceland since they first stepped on the scene in 2013. It wasn’t long until they started to get attention from abroad and after a powerful performance at Iceland Airwaves festival in 2015, they have been performing at festivals all over the continent among them FiB in Spain, Trans Musicales in France, and Roskilde festival in Denmark. The group consists of women from different streams of life, but what unites them is their passion for music, rap, and lyrical flow.
They work as a collective, but also as smaller units within the group. The core of their ideology is to rebel against conservative misogynistic values of modern society, this shines clearly through their lyrics: the empowerment of women standing united; that women can occupy societal space. At the end of the day, they are a large group of women who, on their own terms, enjoy going on stage, giving the audience and each other all they got. Daughters of Reykjavík has received great publicity for tearing down walls and shock their fellow citizens, and therefore plowing the soil for the seeds of coming generations of female rappers.
